Home Movie Day 2016

What a wonderful experience, Come join us next year

I attended my first Home Movie Day [HMD] last month in Raleigh, NC. Home Movie Day is celebrated in October around the world. It started in 2002 as a celebration of amateur home movies.  It is an opportunity for families to share their memories and their stories with others. Sponsored by AVGeeks, the film program at NCSU, and the North Carolina State Archives, HMD was wonderful experience that allowed many families to see film that hadn’t been shown in decades. Not only did we see these films projected on the big screen, but through the generosity of AVGeeks, the films were digitized.

I took two films with me that I had not seen in over 35 years. They were from the mid 1970’s. One was a Christmas celebration and the other was a summer vacation camping trip. Many memories came flooding back as I saw scenes from long ago. Other films included New York in the 1940’s, Western North Carolina through many decades, and Iowa and Ohio in the 1970’s. Many people saw loved ones long gone, beloved family pets from childhood, and family holidays and celebrations. As each film was viewed, the owner narrated scene by scene, so we were able to get a peek in their lives.

Preserving Your Heritage will be sponsoring a Home Movie Day or two in the Alamance/Guilford area in 2017. Keep an eye out for further info.
